The end of T5 Fluorescent lamp lighting is quickly coming to a close, EU markets prohibited their production August 2023 and UK markets February 2024.

The move towards more sustainable and efficient lighting is a welcome one, with LED lighting emerging as the superior solution against the no longer produced fluorescent lamps. Frenger® offers LED replacement lighting for previously supplied Multi-Service Chilled Beams (MSCBs) projects.

Switch to LED Lighting

Why have Fluorescent Lamps been banned?

The shift towards LED lighting is part of a broader amendment to the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive with the previous exemptions for T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps, and special purpose lamps all being amended in Phase 2 of the Single Lighting Regulations, resulting in the phasing out of many types of fluorescent lamps.

While the use and sale of existing fluorescent lamp stock is still allowed, businesses and building owners are urged to start planning early for the switch to more sustainable lighting options.

The RoHS directive, introduced in February 2003, restricts the use of certain substances in electrical equipment manufacturing to reduce their impact on the environment and human health, including mercury in fluorescent lighting, leading to reduced emissions and the development of mercury-free lighting technologies.

Switching to LED Lighting

LED lighting offers numerous advantages over traditional fluorescent lamps, including higher efficiency, clearer and brighter light, and no harmful chemicals. They are environmentally friendly, cost-effective in the long term, and provide long life expectancy and tuneable lighting for improved well-being.

The best option is to fully upgrade the existing luminaires to DALI compatible LEDs that match your existing MSCB units and to work with your existing lighting control system.

Upgrading to an integrated LED fixture earlier helps with energy savings and safeguards against inevitable future price increases due to surging LED demand, as well as benefitting from the energy savings and reduced operational carbon output.

How Frenger® can help

As mentioned previously, Frenger Systems® offers LED replacement lighting for previously supplied MSCB (Multi-Service Chilled Beam) projects, providing an easy and cost-effective solution for those looking to make the switch with full DALI functionality.

Frenger® has vast experience in the design, manufacture, and supply of Multi-Service Chilled Beam (MSCB) units and Multi-Service Radiant Panel (MSRP) units which integrate LED lighting within the units to free up valuable ceiling space and provide a complete HVAC solution.

Frenger® has in-house lighting design and testing. In-house Photometric Laboratory for lighting distribution and Integration Chamber for LOR (Lighting Output Ratio) and efficacy testing.

Frenger® utilise Philips Electronics and first tier components and test every luminaire for:

  • Earth Continuity Test
  • Insultation Resistance Test
  • Polarity Check
  • Function Test - Essential Power & Dimming, Non-Essential Power & Dimming, and Emergency Power & Dimming

Frenger® utilise Philips LED boards and drivers as they are low maintenance in addition to providing the previously highlighted energy and cost savings as well as being >70,000hrs at B10L80 (only 10% of the LEDs will fail to meet 80% of the light output after 70,000hrs of use).

Retrofitting Existing MSCB Units

Frenger® can upgrade existing lighting profiles from T5 Lamps to the more efficient and sustainable LED lighting solution, allowing for the same lighting profile to be reused, such as the louvre lighting profile shown below.

Alternatively, Frenger® can carry out a complete retrofit of the lighting profile on the Multi-Service Chilled Beam to one of their new lighting profile designs such as continuous polycarbonate or multi layered micro prismatic lighting profiles.

LED Lighting Upgrade Before and After Case Study

The before and after photographs below showcases a project where Frenger® has retrofitted the lighting source from inefficient T5 Lamps to highly efficient LED lighting, whilst retaining the original lighting profile.

These photographs are from 101 New Cavendish Street in London, which was originally supplied in 2009 with Frenger's Active Multi-Service Chilled Beams complete with T5 Lamp lighting.

In 2016, Frenger® was then asked to upgrade the luminaires within the previously supplied Active MSCB units with LED lighting. As you can see from the 'After' image below, LED Lighting now covers the whole of the luminaire providing better quality of light to building occupants.

Additional Proposed Lighting Profile Designs

Frenger® has also worked on various bespoke lighting profile designs for their Multi-Service Chilled Beam (MSCB) units including but not limited to the examples showcased below.
